10 Free E-Book Sites for iPad

Want to get the most out of your iPad - Are you using it as an e-reader? There are multiple sites that offer free downloads of both classic and contemporary publications and the reading experience on the iPad is actually quite good. The font size, the instant access to chapters and pages and the .......all make for a positive reading experience. Coupled with this is the fact that this is about the only way to get anybody under the age of 20 to read for any length of time at all.

For younger readers and kids learning to the read the interactive experience will engender a love of interaction with the written word. This is especially true of the newer types of apps that are coming out. The same can be said for students who will be accessing more and more of their textbooks as interactive experiences. We have already seen texts where students can manipulate experiments to alter the outcome, view video and animations highlighting the key points and the individual choosing the style of content presentation that best suits their learning style.

1. Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg offers over 36,000 free ebooks to download to your PC, Kindle, Android, iOS or other portable device. Choose between ePub, Kindle, HTML and simple text formats. They carry high quality ebooks: All the ebooks were previously published by bona fide publishers. They digitized and diligently proofed them with the help of thousands of volunteers and no fee or registration is required.







2. Google Books
Book Search works just like web search. Try a search on Google Books or on Google.com. When they find a book with content that contains a match for the search terms it will link to your search results. If the book is out of copyright, or the publisher has given permission, you'll be able to see a preview of the book, and in some cases the entire text. If it's in the public domain, you're free to download a PDF copy.

This website is near the top of the search engines for "free books" so many of these people end up here. There are many different types of free books you can get online. Some sites offer free downloadable e-books, while others will ship you free books in the mail or give you credits to trade your books and textbooks with others.

The main focus of the web site is providing e-books with particularly high-quality typesetting in multiple formats, particularly EPUB, Kindle, and PDF formats.





10. ePubBooks
The focus of epubBooks is to provide access to ebooks in the industry standard EPUB ebook format, which allows these titles to be read on almost any eReader. While ebook formats like PDF and Plaint Text files can also be read on these devices, they often display in a way that isn't very pleasing to the eye, often looking quite ugly, as .TXT files contain no visual formatting and PDF content doesn't reflow. As many modern eReaders utilise small screens (iPhone, Nook, Sony Reader) this can render the words small and difficult to read, but the reflowable nature of EPUB allows the words to reorganise to suit whatever screen size you're reading on.




Bobo Explores Light: Interactive Learning e-Book

I have been advocating for some time the necessity for visually appealing interactive educational e-books. This new publication from the guys over at Game College looks very promising. This is their 10th app in under 2 and a half years. As a Visual Arts teacher I absolutely love the graphics but more importantly these super cool graphics will be what entice the younger viewer into this app. They will also be the thing that generates the enthusiasm to move from one chapter to the next and the next.


Bobo Explores Light at $6.99 US explores the science behind light and then presents the kids with the opportunity to explore the scientific concepts through narratives, videos, fun facts and interactive experiments. It is the experiments that really make this something out of the ordinary. I want to read the content so I can fully understand the experiments. I like the way that I want to keep changing the variables in order to see how that changes the outcome of each of the interactives. Their video and press release explain it really well.

My own kid spent the whole afternoon on this app when I first installed it - I could not get near it. This is the type of App I have been waiting for. This is an app that we can start to use in the classrooms every day. The activities generate enthusiasm because the content is presented in such interactive ways. They require no up skilling, they are self paced and can be used as attention grabber at the start of a unit of work or even as part of an extension activity for a student who has worked ahead or finished early.















Dean MacAdam the illustrator has done a great job with the graphic interface of this App. It is presented in such a funky way you can not help but be pulled into Bobo's world. Although this app is based on some really interesting science and good educational principles it is the stylishly graphics that hold this concept together so well.

Bobo Explores Light is one of the first apps that really showcases the capabilities of interactive e-books in education. It is an excellent example of what can be achieved when you intelligently partner educational outcomes with entertaining delivery.





Assessment Apps by Vicki Windman

Assessment Apps by Vicki Windman
As administrators and educators, we need to find ways to assess staff and students. If you work with special-needs students, part of the process is documenting goals that are measureable. We now have apps that can assist us with tracking students' progress.

There are quite a few free observation and data apps but you must commit to their software to sync your data. Examples include: Ecove, Stride walkthrough, RANDA, Observation 360,OASYS.
IEP checklist Free - A great tool to have at your fingertips when you need to track IEP goals for your students. It allows you to input relevant data so you can keep track of your student’s goals. Additionally, it now allows you to record individual notes while tracking student progress.
Percentally $2.99- Many of the IEP goals are looking for percentage benchmarks for an assigned goal. This app allows you to customize the goal for each student and mark progress using percentage. You can export your information to Google Docs so you have a back up record.
GoDocs $4.99 - Allows you to sync with your Google Docs, even if you have more than one account. It also allows you to edit on the iPad.
K12 timed Reading $1.99 - Fluency app. It allows more than one student levels K-4th grade. improving fluency allows readers to read smoothly and quickly so they can focus on comprehension rather than on decoding words.
Super Duper Data Tracker $1.99 - Organize your students into groups. Then enter your student’s names and their goals. Track incorrect and correct responses discreetly and efficiently.
Behavioral Tracker Pro 29.99 - Tracks behaviors and automatically graphs them. Supports unlimited number of children and observers!
Teacher Assistant Pro $3.99 - Keeps track of student actions, behavior, infractions, and achievements in the classroom.
